Transcendentalism Paper: Length: 2-4 pages  Worth: 50 points  Due: 1/15/10

In your personal response to Transcendentalism, or at least one aspect of it, find some part of the philosophy that you connect with on some level, either because it especially attracts you, or because it especially bothers you.  Do not try to cover several parts as it will make your paper too unfocused.

Now take that part and make sure that somewhere in the paper you explain the idea thoroughly.  I will base part of your grade on your understanding of a specific aspect of the philosophy.  Feel free but not required to use quotes.  The majority of your paper, however, describes how your life reflects your response.  In other words you will not philosophize or tell me what you would like to do someday or what bothers you, but rather how the actions and events of your life show that this philosophy works or does not work for you.  You certainly may share your feelings, but I want you to primarily focus on actions.  You might write about a trip you took into nature, a time when you took a stand that made you unpopular, a very individual moral decision you made and carried out, risks you have taken so as not to stay in a rut; on the other hand, you may write about your need for a large and influential circle of friends, the technology that enriches your life, the material world that you enjoy, or your dislike of camping.  Can Thoreau’s and Emerson’s ideas fit into today’s world?

This paper shows rather than tells – vivid and specific.  It does not call for a 5-paragraph essay, but a more informal set up where the ideas set the format.  Like Thoreau and Emerson, you should write passionately.  Have a good time.

Bonus: On the back of this you will find feedback that was addressed to last years’ juniors after they submitted their papers.  You have the benefit of receiving this beforehand!  Isn’t life wonderful!?
